Spring is officially here. Finally! Although the temperatures might not yet feel very Spring-like, there’s no need to wait until the warmer, t-shirt wearing temperatures have arrived to start prepping your skin. In fact, the prep work needs to begin now. You’ve most likely been taking extra good care of the skin on your face throughout the Winter months in preparation for Spring. And that’s really great. But you also need to take good care of the skin on your body too. So let’s get started with these 4 easy ways to ensure you have Spring ready skin.
I recently touched on a couple of the steps I mention below in this video. However, today I’m going to talk in much more detail about how to use the products I spoke about. And I’ll tell you why incorporating them into your daily and weekly routine is so beneficial for your skin.
During the Winter months, your skin is exposed to very cold temperatures and central heating, which leaves it looking and feeling very dry and dehydrated. Sure, your body has been covered up in several layers of clothing for quite some time now. So no one (not even you sometimes) will even see your arms or legs. But just because you can’t see them as much in Winter due to all of the big layers of clothing, it doesn’t mean that the other parts of your body should suffer from a lack of TLC.
The cold temperatures and central heating are two of the main causes of rough, dry, dull looking skin. Not a good look or feeling. But using these 4 very quick and easy tips will have your skin looking and feeling glowing and hydrated well in time for the arrival of Spring temperatures. So let’s get your skin ready for Spring.
Step 1. Exfoliate your skin once or twice per week
Exfoliation is one of those words that you hear a lot in the beauty world. But what is it exactly and why is it so important? Firstly, exfoliation simply refers to the removal of dry, flaky skin. By exfoliating, you’re encouraging your body to grow new and healthy skin cells. It’s a technique that can be used on the face and body too. And why is it so important? Well, getting rid of that dry, flaky skin is going to leave you with gorgeous, glowing skin that looks and feels hydrated. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to have skin that looks and feels glowing, hydrated and healthy?
How Do I Exfoliate?
So now that you know what exfoliation is, the next question is, how do you do it? There are a few ways you can do this. One way is to use an exfoliating product like a body scrub. Something to keep in mind is that the skin on your face is a lot thinner than the skin on your body. So whilst the exfoliation technique is similar for both your face and your body, you should take extra care when exfoliating your face by using less pressure and much gentler products. As we’re talking about your body today, I’m going to concentrate on the exfoliation technique for your body.
Using a Body Scrub to exfoliate
I’m sure you’ve heard of these before and possibly have one in your bathroom. But perhaps it’s still sitting there as you’re not sure how the heck to use it! Body scrubs are one of my favourite ways to exfoliate my body and remove dry, flaky skin. The reason is that they’re very simple to use and they make the process feel like a real treat for my skin.
How to use a Body Scrub
1. Simply hop into the shower and apply the scrub to your body. Make sure that your skin is slightly damp first and then begin to apply the body scrub.
2. Take some of the product and begin to massage it onto your skin in a circular motion. Begin with your feet and work your way up your body, finishing at your neck and shoulders. Use a circular motion to apply the body scrub rather than just rubbing it up and down on your skin. This will also help to increase the circulation in your body too. Pay particular attention to areas such as your feet, knees, elbows and hands, as these are the areas that are often most dry or rough.
3. Once you’ve applied the body scrub on all areas of your body, simply rinse it off completely. Always follow up with a body moisturiser after exfoliating. This will really help to hydrate your skin and lock in extra moisture. I’ll talk more about body moisturisers in step 2 below.
Tips for applying a Body Scrub
Try to avoid rubbing your skin too hard, even if you feel like your skin is very dry. If you do feel that your skin is very dry, it’s best to exfoliate on a more regular and consistent basis. Aim for twice per week. That way, you won’t irritate your skin and it will be so much more beneficial for your skin. It will stop dry skin from building up as much.
And in case you’re thinking that this process takes a long time to do, IT DOESN’T! This is something you can do in minutes and you can incorporate this into your usual shower routine. Allow an extra couple of minutes to apply your body scrub. Then rinse off well and continue with your daily shower routine. That’s it. Of course, you could also make this a special routine for yourself if you like on a weekly basis. You could choose a particular day of the week to do this that’s dedicated just to you. What a lovely way to practice some self-care and enjoy some well-deserved ‘me time’. 🙂
Which Body Scrub?
There are literally thousands of body scrubs to choose from. So it’s really about finding the one that’s best for your skin. I can, however, give you some tips on how to find a good body scrub and I’ll also share with you my absolute favourite body scrub.
Most body scrubs contain an exfoliant such as sea salt or sugar. Both are really great for getting rid of dry, flaky skin. Sea salt can be quite coarse, so take extra care not to rub your skin too harshly when applying a sea salt body scrub. Sugar has a slightly gentler texture than sea salt, as the granules are more round than sea salt granules. If you have sensitive skin, a body scrub that contains sugar is a great option for you, as it’s not as rough on your skin as sea salt.
My absolute favourite body scrubs are these ones by Potentia. These body scrubs are 100% natural and cruelty-free. They contain raw sugar as well as plenty of gorgeous essential oils too. So they’re also hydrating your skin at the same time as exfoliating. They leave your skin looking and feeling utterly glowing, hydrated and feeling baby soft. They’re a staple product in my bathroom and they’re an absolute joy to use. I always feel like I’m giving my skin a real treat when I use these.
Other ways to exfoliate your skin
These are another very effective tool to use to remove dry, dead skin. They can be used on wet or dry skin. The gloves are generally made from an elasticated, woven material. So this is what makes them ideal for exfoliating. They’re available to buy at most drugstores. However, if you prefer to use gloves that are made from a more natural fabric, you might like these ones from Hydrea London. The technique for exfoliating with gloves is the same as using a body scrub.
Another way to exfoliate is by using a method called Dry Brushing. This is basically the same as exfoliating except that you exfoliate on dry skin, not wet skin. You do it by using a brush that has soft, short bristles. Be careful when choosing a brush. If the brush is too hard, it will damage your skin. This body brush by The Green People Company is perfect for dry brushing. It contains natural hair bristles, so it’s ideal for sensitive skin. As with the body scrub technique, begin at your feet and work your way up your body using circular motions.
Step 2. Always moisturise your skin after a shower or bath
Now you’ve gotten rid of any dry, dull, flaky skin and your skin is starting to look glowing and healthy again. So you want to ensure that it stays like this. I’m guessing that you probably use a moisturiser on your face every day, as you’re aware of the importance of keeping your skin hydrated. So the second step to Spring ready skin is to do the exact same for the skin on the rest of your body.
How do I do this?
The easiest way is to apply a body lotion on your skin every single day. Applying a body lotion straight after you shower or bathe is the optimal time to do this, as you’re instantly replacing any moisture that’s lost whilst in the shower or bath. Again, this is not a long process. In fact, this will only take you about 1 minute to do. If you don’t have time to do this in the morning, aim to do this in the evening before bed.
Which Body Lotion?
One of the biggest issues people have with body lotions is that it takes so long for them to dry and soak into their skin. However, these body lotions from Alverde take literally seconds to soak into your skin, yet they’re very hydrating. If you have very dry skin, I can highly recommend this one. It’s got a very light texture yet it moisturises my skin very well. And I don’t have to wait around for a long time for it to soak into my skin. So I can get dressed straight away. The ingredients in this product are all of a natural and/or organic source. And it’s also suitable for vegans too.
The next 2 tips are things that are great for your entire health and well-being that you can start doing now to prep your skin for Spring.
Step 3. Get into the habit of drinking of plenty of water now
This may sound a bit obvious, but drinking lots of water is the number one treat you can give your skin. And whilst I realise it can be harder to drink a lot of water in the colder months, it’s still vital for glowing, healthy skin. It doesn’t matter how good your skincare or makeup products are. If you’re not drinking enough water, you’re going to be dehydrated. And the number one place this is going to be visible is on your skin. For example, fine lines and wrinkles are one symptom of dehydration.
Simple Ways to Get into the Habit of Drinking More Water
Get into the habit now of drinking at least 1 to 2 litres of water per day, or even more if you can. It’s actually simpler than you think to do this. Buy yourself a nice water bottle that’s approximately 500 to 1000 ml and fill it up each morning with water. Then keep the bottle beside you throughout the day. That way, you’re more likely to drink the water as it’s right within your reach at all times. It will become a habit in no time and your skin will look and feel radiant, glowing and healthy well in time for Spring.

Step 4. Get into a fitness routine now
Even though it’s not quite t-shirt weather, the temperatures have already started to pick up slightly. And the sun is even starting to shine. So this is a great time to start getting outdoors again. Even going for a 20-30 minute walk a couple of times per week is going to do wonders for your skin and your overall well-being. You’ll start to notice the benefits pretty quickly. If you need some extra accountability, why not arrange to go walking with a friend a couple of times per week. As you’ve already made a plan with someone, it’s going to motivate you to actually go and do it.
Or if you want to take things a step further, make an appointment with one of the trainers at your gym. Most gyms offer free sessions like this to all members. So make sure to take advantage of this. It will help you to get back into a fitness routine. And as you’ll be following a set programme that’s specifically for you, you’ll feel motivated to go.
Make sure it’s fun
Other options are to join a running or jogging group. This one here in Munich is organised by the wonderful Ceri Temple. It’s also a great way to meet people. But it really doesn’t matter what type of exercise you do. The important thing is to be active in some form or other in a way that’s fun for you. The benefits are enormous for your entire body, both physically and mentally. And this is going to be immediately visible on your skin.
You may have heard the phrase that ‘a bikini body is made now, not in Summer’. The same applies to taking care of your skin. Following these 4 simple steps now will mean your skin is prepped and primed the minute you can start wearing lighter clothing again.
I hope you found these tips helpful. Sometimes incorporating a couple of little things into your routine is all that’s needed to make a big difference to how you look and feel. Sure, we’re all busy people and under time-pressure. But it’s totally worth taking an extra few minutes per day to do something nice that’s completely dedicated just to you. Everyone can spare an extra 5 minutes per day. And surely you’re worth taking at least 5 minutes just for yourself.
