Summer is finally here. Yeahhh. 🙂 This is my absolute favourite time of the year. It’s also the time of the year when I tend to wear a little less makeup than usual. However, that doesn’t mean I go without completely. I still want to look polished and professional every single day. And I still want healthy glowing looking skin. In the first of my Summer Style Essentials series, I’m going to focus on face products. If you want to know how to get healthy glowing looking skin this Summer in just a couple of minutes, then keep on reading.
I’ve been getting asked a lot lately about what products to use to beat the Summer heat. A lot of you want to want to use very few products, yet still have natural healthy glowing looking skin. This can be a tough one for some of us. On one hand, you want to wear less makeup products in Summer and go for a more ‘natural’ look. On the other hand, you still want to look polished and professional. And that’s not always possible when it’s really hot outside (or inside) and your face starts to have a lot of shine throughout the day and if your complexion is not so even.
However, don’t despire. There is a way to do both. 🙂 You can get a minimalistic look, using a minimal amount of products and still have healthy glowing looking skin. The following products are the exact products and techniques that I use on myself every single day in Summer. So I know that they work. Let’s get started.
1. CONCEALER : The First Step to Healthy Glowing Looking Skin
Some of us may have darker skin in Summer, but this unfortunately doesn’t mean mean that we don’t have dark circles around our eyes, or redness on our skin. In fact sometimes we party a little harder in Summer, which means going to bed in the wee small hours of the morning. Or perhaps you find it harder to sleep in Summer due to the heat. No matter the reason, a lack of sleep means dark eye circles, and we still get spots and have redness on our skin in Summer too. So that’s why it’s still a good idea to use a little concealer in Summer too, to even out your skintone and to ensure you still have a healthy natural glow to your skin.
I ALWAYS use my beloved Younique Concealers in shades Organza and Velour to neutralise both of these issues. Whether I’m wearing foundation or not, these concealers are an absolute ESSENTIAL in both my personal and professional kits. The coverage these concealers give is second to none, and I sometimes don’t even feel like I need to wear any foundation at all when I wear these. That doesn’t mean that they look or feel heavy on my skin. Far from it. And I only need to use the smallest amount of each to achieve the results I want. This is why they are PERFECT for Summer too. So you can ditch the foundation for the Summer months, as this concealer will give you gorgeous healthy glowing looking skin.
TO ENHANCE DARK EYE CIRCLES
I use shade Organza. This shade has an orange undertone to it, so that’s why it’s perfect for enhancing dark eye circles, which generally have a bluish undertone to them. Here’s why. Orange and blue are opposite each other on the colour wheel. Colours that are opposite each other will neutralise each other. So always choose a concealer that has an orange undertone to it when you want to enhance the eye area. If you have medium toned skin, choose the shade Chiffon to enhance the eye area. If you have dark toned skin, choose the shade Charmeuse. If you have very dark skin, go for the shade Georgette.
Profi Tip: DON’T apply concealer all the way up to the lashline. Otherwise, you run the risk of looking even more tired, as the product will settle in any lines or wrinkles. Instead, apply the concealer directly onto the darkest area, and a little on and around the eye socket. Apply a TINY AMOUNT of this concealer, as it is very highly pigmented. An amount the size of pinhead will suffice for both eyes. This step takes approx 30-40 seconds maximum.
TO NEUTRALISE REDNESS
I tend to have some redness around my nose & chin and sometimes on my cheeks, as do a lot of us. So I use the shade Velour to neutralise the redness and to even out my skintone ever so slightly. This shade has a green undertone to it, so this will neutralise the redness in the areas where I need it. Green and Red are opposite each other on the colour wheel. So applying the same theory as I explained above, a concealer with a green undertone is going to neutralise any redness on the skin. If you have medium toned skin, go for the shade Satin. If you have dark toned skin, choose the shade Velvet or Chenille. If you don’t have any redness on your skin, you can skip this step, and go straight to step 2 below.
Profi tip: It’s best to apply with either a flat brush or a damp makeup sponge. This will ensure a perfectly smooth application, as the product will be perfectly blended into your skin and it will ensure a natural look, which is going to enhance your complexion beautifully. If you’re going to use your hands to apply and blend the concealer, ensure that your hands are THOROUGHLY CLEAN. Otherwise you run the risk of skin irrations or blemishes as your hands are dirty. This step takes approx 30-40 seconds maximum.
2. SUNSCREEN : The Second Step to Healthy Glowing Looking Skin
Another product I ALWAYS include in my daily beauty routine is sunscreen. In fact, this should be an absolute must in every skincare routine, even in Winter. My absolute favourite sunscreen is Bare Minerals SPF 30 Natural Sunscreen. This product is the perfect compliment to my Younique Concealers, and it’s actually such a great multi-tasker too. It protects my skin from sunburn and sun damage. But not only that, it also counteracts against any shine on my T-Zone, as it’s a powder. Yes, you read that correctly. It’s a sunscreen in powder form, which is exactly why I love it so much.
I really hate the feel of heavy sun protection creams on my face, and they can often lead to breakouts. So this SPF 30 sunscreen is the perfect solution for any of you who struggle with this problem too. It feels so lightweight on my skin, that I don’t even know that I’m wearing anything. Yet I know that my skin is protected.
The other thing I love about this sunscreen is that it has a slight tint to it. It comes in 3 different shades. I actually use the shade Medium myself, even though I have light skin. I personally find the shade Light a little too pale for my skintone. If you have darker skin, go for the shade Tan. The benefit to this having a slight tint to it, is that it also evens out and enhances your complexion ever so slightly. So your skin is protected, and you have a beautiful, naturally looking glow to your skin at the same time. And, as it’s a powder, it also helps to set the liquid concealer in place, and it counteracts any shine that you have on your T-Zone.
How to apply: This product literally could not be easier to apply. You just twist the tube to open and the brush pops up. Turn upside down and give the tube a little shake to release some of the product onto the brush. Then just apply to your face using the brush in a circular motion. That’s it. It takes about 20-30 seconds. You can pop this in your bag and bring it with you as it’s so light, so that you can reapply as needed throughout the day.
So there you have it. As you can tell, it’s still possible to wear a minimal amount of product and still look and feel fabulous. And applying these products literally takes only 2 Minutes, or less. When I wear these products, I feel like I’m wearing nothing on my face, which is perfect for Summer. Yet my skin is protected, and it still looks like I have healthy glowing looking skin.
