Last week I spoke about prepping your skin for Spring. This week we’re going to talk about Spring makeup. And I’m going to concentrate on one colour in particular. It’s Pantone Greenery, the 2017 Colour of the Year. It’s a beautiful shade that makes me feel uplifted every time I see it. And it’s a perfect shade for Spring. Now you might be thinking that there’s no way you would ever wear this shade in your makeup. Or perhaps you’ve already bought a few products in this shade but you’re not sure how to wear them. But there are several ways you can incorporate this beautiful colour into your beauty routine. And yes, they’re totally wearable and you can make the looks as subtle or as bold as you like. Read on to find out how you can wear Pantone Greenery.
Why Should I care about the Colour of the Year?
Let’s first begin with a little bit of background on the Colour of the Year and why it’s such a big deal. Each year, The Pantone Colour Institute chooses a colour for the year ahead. This is the colour that will influence a lot of the makeup, fashion and interior designs trends for that year. So if you’ve ever wondered why you’re seeing a lot of the same colour in the shops, it all stems from Pantone’s choice for their Colour of the Year.
Last year, they actually choose two colours for the very first time. They were Rose Quartz, a dusky pink, and Serenity, a pale blue. Actually, these two colours are also perfect for Spring makeup. So if you’d like to see how to incorporate them into your beauty routine, I’ve got plenty of tips for you here. The Colour of the Year in 2015 was the gorgeous burgundy shade, Marsala.
Meet Pantone Greenery – The Colour of the Year 2017
This year, Pantone have chosen the shade Greenery. They describe the shade as “A refreshing and revitalising shade, Greenery is symbolic of new beginnings. Greenery is a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew. Illustrative of flourishing foliage and the lushness of the great outdoors, the fortifying attributes of Greenery signals consumers to take a deep breath, oxygenate and reinvigorate.”
I really like this year’s colour Greenery. As I already mentioned, I feel uplifted when I see this shade and it really reminds me of Spring and being outdoors. But maybe you’re thinking ‘how the heck do I incorporate this into my makeup routine without looking like I just stepped out of the 80’s’?!
“Though Greenery may seem like an overly-energetic hue to some, I view it as more of a neutral,” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute. “Where beauty is concerned it’s the ultimate personal display of boldness and vitality. Greenery is deployed as a chic, confident punch of colour for hair, lips, eyes and nails.”
Don’t be put off by introducing a colourful shade like this into your makeup routine. There a few ways you can do this subtly which are perfect for every day, which I’ll tell you about in a moment. Adding a hint of colour is a great way to brighten up your entire face in seconds. No matter whether it’s in your makeup routine or your clothing. It’s such a quick and easy way to make you look instantly refreshed and awake. Now let’s look at some ways you can do this.
Using Greenery in your eye makeup is a great way to wear this shade. Don’t worry if you’re thinking that green eyeshadow is too much for you. I’ve got some great suggestions on how to wear this in a subtle way that’s still suitable for everyday wear. This shade is particularly beautiful on brown, hazel or blue eyes. It will really enhance them even further.
Here are a few ways you can wear Pantone Greenery as an eyeshadow.
1. The first method is very subtle but oh so pretty. And it’s a great way to introduce yourself to wearing more colourful eye makeup. Apply a couple of neutral shades of eyeshadow on your eyelids and in your crease. Then apply a small amount of green eyeshadow on your lower lashline. In other words, right under your bottom lashes. As you’re also using neutral shades, this keeps the look very daytime friendly. This is a great choice if you want just a hint of colour that’s suitable for everyday wear.
2. Another simple way to achieve just a pop of colour is to apply a little green eyeshadow just above your crease. Begin by applying a light coloured shade of eyeshadow all over your eyelid. Then apply a darker shade to your outer corners. Next gently apply Pantone Greenery eyeshadow in your crease and just slightly above your crease too. Make sure to blend the shades well together. This will keep the look soft. And it will give a lovely pop of colour that will really brighten up your look in a subtle way.
3. If you’re not afraid of applying a colourful eyeshadow, this next one is for you. Apply Pantone Greenery all over your eyelid and bring it slightly into the crease too for a lovely colourful smokey eye. Make sure to blend it very well. Apply a gel or liquid dark brown or black eyeliner to finish off the look.
4. Again, apply Pantone Greenery all over your eyelid. Then pair it with a medium neutral shade in your crease. Next, apply a darker shade of eyeshadow on the outer corners of your eyes. The contrast with the darker shade helps to keep the look a little more muted and wearable. Apply an eyeliner in a dark brown or black shade to finish the look if you wish.
This is always one of my favourite ways to wear brighter colours on my eyes. The reason is that it’s such an easy way to give my eyes a pop of colour. And it’s fun too.
For a hint of colour, apply Pantone Greenery along your upper lash line. For a really soft, smokey look, apply an eyeliner pencil and smudge it out with an eye makeup brush to soften the line. This gorgeous Soft Eyeliner Pencil in the shade green from Lavera would look beautiful on the upper lashline.
Or you could apply the same eyeliner pencil in your waterline. For a slightly more defined or dramatic look, apply a liquid eyeliner to your upper lashline.
If you like doing more advanced looks, greenery would look great paired with a black or dark brown eyeliner. First, apply your chosen shade of gel or liquid eyeliner. Then apply Pantone Greenery eyeliner over that shade. The contrast between the darker and lighter shades will look really great and will give your eyes a great pop of colour.
Just remember. The key to wearing a colourful shade like Greenery is to keep everything else on your face neutral. Wear a nude or peach shade on your lips and a peach toned blush on your cheeks.
This is probably the easiest way to wear Pantone Greenery. Especially if you’re not quite ready to try this shade in your makeup routine just yet. Apply one of the below shades all over your nails. If you prefer a more natural look on your nails, but would still like a pop of colour, why not try an inverted French manicure. This is where you apply a coloured shade to your nail tips instead of white. And then apply neutral shades as usual on the rest of your nails. It’s such an interesting take on the standard French manicure, but it still keeps things neutral as the coloured shade is only on the tips.
Greenery Nail Polishes
Butter London has collaborated with Pantone to make an exact replica of the shade Greenery. These nail polishes are 8-free, which means they’re free from 8 of the most toxic ingredients that are found in a lot of mainstream nail polishes. So you’ll be safe in the knowledge that these nail polishes are not harmful. They’re also vegan-friendly too.
Another great choice is the shade Tilda by the brand Zoya. These are 7-free and vegan-friendly too. A slightly lighter shade of green, but still a great match to Pantone Greenery, is Pistachio by Mavala. You’ve probably heard me speak about these polishes before. They’re 7-free and vegan-friendly. What I also love about these polishes is the size of the bottles. The mini size is so practical. I never finish a bottle of nail polish. So they tend to dry out. But this small size bottle means that I always finish them, meaning no wastage. Which also means great value for money, because you’ll actually use the entire product.
Now I’d love to hear from you. What do you think of Pantone Greenery? Do you like this shade? Which one of these 3 ways would you wear this shade?
