The fabulous Olga Kireeva is the founder and owner of the beautiful bridal store The White Dress Company here in Munich. She’s helped severals hundreds of brides over the years to choose their perfect wedding dress. So as you can imagine, she knows a thing or two about bridal styling. When choosing your dress, all the usual rules about styling, sizing and what usually suits you go out the window. But Olga has 10 amazing tips for us today that will help make the shopping process much simpler and stress-free. So let’s get started.
Q1. What are the bridal trends for the 2017 wedding season?
A: Bridal gowns with lace and/or with long lace sleeves are still a big trend this season. Ball gowns with ruffled skirts are also big for 2017. As far as colours go, blush, caffe and powder blue will be popular this year. You’ll also see a lot of 3D floral embellishments in bridal magazines and on bridal blogs. Another trend this season is the ‘sexy bride’. So expect to see a lot of deep v-necks, sheer lace and leg slits.
Q2. How far in advance should a bride begin shopping for her perfect wedding dress? Is there a perfect time to buy her bridal gown?
A: The perfect time to start is 6 to 9 months ahead of your wedding date. As soon as the date is set and you’ve decided on your wedding concept and style, it’s then time to begin shopping for your wedding gown.
Q3. What are the first steps she should take? What things does she need to consider first?
A: Get some inspiration from various sources. Look in bridal magazines as well as online in places such as wedding blogs. Then choose 1 to 3 boutiques that have the styles that you like and that fit in with your whole wedding style. And then start trying out some styles to see if you like them.
Q4. What should she look for in a dress? What are the most important things?
A: The most important thing is to feel like a beautiful bride, yet to feel comfortable and like yourself. No dressing up. Listen to your heart and if you feel comfortable and love yourself in the dress, this is it.
Q5. What should a bride look for when choosing the right bridal boutique?
A: The boutique should have the right styles, a nice atmosphere and a good service. They should provide professional and personal advice, a seamstress service for any alterations that may be needed as well as a willingness to find the perfect wedding gown for every bride.
Q6. Should she always make an appointment in advance and if so, how much time should she allocate for this?
A: Yes, all good boutiques work on an appointment only basis as personal service is very important. Weekend and late appointments are always popular, so 2 to 3 weeks in advance is often necessary to secure one of these appointments. If the bride does not have so much time, it can be possible to get an appointment at the last minute, as there are often last minute changes or cancellations.
Q7. Who and what should she bring with her to her first appointment and all subsequent appointments after that?
A: She should bring 1 to 2 close friends or relatives with her. They should be people who know her and her personal style. They should also be people who understand the whole wedding theme and who also like it. These same people should go to all the appointments in different boutiques, so they know what gowns the bride is choosing from.
Q8. What extras should a bride budget for also?
A: First of all, she should budget for a seamstress, in case of any final alterations. Depending on the complexity of the dress and the alterations required, it usually costs an additional 10-20% of the bridal gown price for this service. She should also budget for extras such as accessories like shoes, a veil, a headpiece or bridal jewellery.
Q9. What advice would you give to a bride who’s looking for something a little bit different and not a standard wedding dress?
A: Go to small, individual bridal boutiques, like us at The White Dress Company :-). We work with designers who offer a variety of special changes to the gown to make it special and individual. And a good seamstress can do magic too.
Q10. Do you have any other tips or advice for brides that you think they should also consider?
A: Do not let other people influence you. It is the most important gown you’ll ever buy in your life. If you feel gorgeous in a dress, then that this is your perfect wedding dress!
Now let’s get to know Olga a little better
Q1. What are your favourite styles?
A: I love strapless ball gowns with ruffled skirts and interesting details like bows, buttons and pockets.
Q2. What’s do you love most about your job? What part gives you the most pleasure and joy?
A: The best part of my job is when the bride puts on the dress and starts smiling because she loves herself in the dress. This smile just stays on and the bride twirls around in the dress and dances through the boutique. I love it when I find the perfect wedding dress for the bride. This is extra special for me because it’s often a dress that is completely different to her initial idea. I love it when she utters the words „Oh my God, this is my dress!“.
Q3. What advice would you give to a bride who is just starting out planning her wedding?
A: As a bridal boutique owner, I would suggest that the couple should think about what THEY like and plan their wedding day as THEY want their wedding to be. Things like style, location, decoration and food are important, but it shouldn’t be planned for the guests. It should be planned around the bride & groom and what they like and want. After all, it is THEIR special day. And on the wedding day itself, let all the planning go and make sure to fully enjoy the day!
Q4. How did you become a bridal boutique owner and how did The White Dress Company come about?
A: I started nearly 6 years ago, changing from the automotive industry, as I wanted to do something more beautiful and girly. The Aha-moment came when one of my friends was looking at her wedding pictures. She explained how different the bridal shopping experience is in Munich from what she imagined. She said, „I wish we had a boutique with friendly staff and different dresses, not the ones you see everywhere“. That was the moment I thought „Hm, that could be something for me“. And hence The White Dress Company came to be.
